Still Unsure about my Migraines

So my migraines have been going...

I've come to the conclusion that they're never going away, but I've always known that. It's just hard to come to this realization at this point in your last-ditch-effort treatment to suppress your pain.

On Thursday, I will get my third Botox treatment that will last twelve weeks. At this end of this twelve weeks, I'll see {hopefully} how much the treatments will help me in the future. (Nine months was the amount of time my doctor wanted me to wait to see the full effects of treatment.)

The treatments have been, over time, helping a somewhat as I've noticed. So far, the frequency of migraines that I have in one month has not gone down, but by a few. The intensity and severity of my migraines has gone down. The migraines are more responsive to medication; they tend to go away within 30 minutes, instead of lingering all day (when I take medication). The only problem is determining when to take medication (because I only have a certain amount per month) and not to take too much because then I can get rebound headaches from it.

One of the hardest parts is that when I do get a migraine, even right after taking my mediation, I almost always feel the need to lie down until the medication kicks in. That is impossible to do at work, so I usually just give myself an injection or take a pill, plow through, and hope it goes away with out being able to rest for 20-30 minutes.

But the toughest thing to get used to {besides the Botox injections} are the Torodol injections that I have to give myself when my migraine last for days at a time and none of my medication is working to get rid of them. I have never been a needle-loving girl. I used to pass out in the doctor's office when my mom was pregnant with my younger sister, Rachael, and they'd take her blood for tests. I distinctly remember blacking out once and then waking up with my head between my legs while I was sitting on the floor.

Being able to give myself injections at all is coming a long way for me. Seriously. I laughed the first time my doctor suggested it. I never in my life would have imagined myself at this place giving myself injections. My grandpa would have laughed too. He used to pass out at the sight of needles as well {must be genetic :) }. The last few times that I've had to give them, just looking at the needle made me nauseous. I was already nauseous from the migraine, so I had to call Bjorn to give them to me.

Sometimes it can be really overwhelming. It still makes me a little emotional just thinking about how far I've come and that I still seem to have so many migraine-filled days. I know I should be optimistic, especially knowing that with all these medications, the migraines have become more manageable. But it is really hard sometimes to be optimistic in the face of all of this.

I'm not looking forward to Thursday. My second round of Botox was not a fun one. The numbing cream wore off waiting on my doctor, so I felt every needle going into my face. Super not fun. This time I am timing them to get their booties in the door before it wears off. If not, we're rubbing some more cream all over my head.

So we'll see how this round goes. I definitely notice the Botox wearing off, which I think is a good thing. The last two weeks, my neck has been so stiff and in a lot of pain. It must have really helped to block the nerve signals from my neck and upper back, which really helped with those types of migraines. I know I need to get another treatment; it's just knowing I have to get it done that doesn't make for a good week :(

Hopefully, I'll have some good news that the Botox is helping more at the end of the next three months, since my doctor is beginning to tailor the doses and injection sites to my needs and pain areas. Knock on wood, fingers crossed, and I told my dad to keep an eye on me. I know he is. Here's to hoping these next three months are positive for my migraines.

My Life with Migraines Update

I know I promised an update on my migraine situation. I'm not going to drag this out. Those of you who know me, know I've had a long struggle with migraines. They've continued to worsen my whole life. I'm at the point where I get on average 17 migraine days per month. Sometimes my "rescue" medication takes away the migraines, and sometimes it does not.

Bjorn snapped this of my one night.
This is what happens when I get a migraine.
Take some medicine, put a heating pad on my head, and try to sleep.

I know a lot of my food triggers, and I try to stay away from those. My everyday life triggers are a little trickier. I tend to get a migraine almost always after working out. The heat seems to be a trigger (even if I do drink more than my usual amount of water for the day). Really bright lights and seriously loud noises can get me when I'm already on my way to a migraine.

This past year has been a year full of taking new medication that haven't helped. They've made me exhausted, overheated, not myself, and gain some weight, among other things. I have not felt myself this year. I am also taking a lot of supplements, which I'm okay with. I am now taking some medications that help me get through each day with little side effects. I also recently started giving myself injections when needed to help deliver my rescue medication more quickly at the onset of a migraine. This allows me to get back to everyday life more quickly because the medication takes effect on my migraines way more quickly than taking any pill could. I have also found a new medical masseuse, who is amazing! She really helps keep my back and neck loosened up!

The biggest news, I guess, is that on Monday, I will be starting Botox injections for my migraines. As I write this, I get little anxious butterflies in my stomach about it. I debated for a long time about getting this treatment done. I wasn't sure if it was right for me, but I literally feel like I'm at the end of my rope. I have taken almost every migraine medication that can be prescribed to patients, to no avail. My current medications keep me going mostly, but don't diminish my migraines. I don't want to know how many migraines I'd have in a month without them!

After serious consultation with my doctor and much research on my own, I have come to the conclusion that I need to try this. If Botox, in any way, can give me a better quality of life, than I need to try. So that is where I am. I am hopeful that this will give me some relief. If you're interested in hearing more about how it goes after my first treatment, let me know. I wanted to keep this update brief.

I am extremely nervous about the whole treatment. Mostly, I think, because I know this is one of my last serious options in getting potential relief from my migraines. I feel somewhat emotional about the prospect, anxious, and nervous. Please send positive vibes my way on Monday, if you can. I would greatly appreciate it. The treatment consists of 31 injections in my forehead, head, and neck. (Orginally, I remembered 38! I'm glad that number is a little lower in reality!!) I would appreciate your positive thoughts!

A Hard Reality, But Going Somewhere

Sometimes along this journey of finding my happy, I sit and wonder, is this my happy? Sometimes bad days cloud my vision, and it's harder to see through the sad, the frustrated, and the unknown.

Over the past few months, I have had a difficult time with my migraines. I have been on a new medication that makes me exhausted. I have no energy, and I don't feel like myself. I feel like, in a sense, I'm in this weird "waiting" place with my migraines. I'm waiting for something to work. Nothing has, and I'm just waiting for the next medication, the next suggestion, the next failure. I know that's a downer, but it's hard to stay positive sometimes

A Typical Migraine Night

I keep reminding myself that I am still doing other things that I love, even though I feel like I don't have my life together right now because I'm not feeling the greatest. I'm doing the best I can at the moment with the amount of headaches that I am having. I also realize that some treatments are going to affect me in adverse ways.

My goal through all of this is to not place crazy expectations on myself.  If I feel exhausted, I need a break. Maybe I'll take a nap. And I'm not going to beat myself up about it. I'm not pushing myself until I fall over. I need to listen to my body and what is happening right now at this moment in time with my migraines. And right now, my body is telling me, "Whoa, Nelly! Take it easy!!" I am not going to feel guilty because I'm not doing all my usual activities at my usual pace. I'm going to talk to my new doctor when the time comes and roll with the punches.

This is a reminder to myself that happiness is what I make of it. It is not an expectation set by my anxiety or my OCD:

Shades of Gray

Happiness is black and white with gray around the edges
swirled together like cold milk stirred into a steaming cup of coffee.
Sometimes it's circles of orange, yellow, gold, and red
bobbing across a crisp, ocean blue sky
radiating heat and fearless energy.
Other times it's mauve polka dots and pale green stripes
riding in and out on the breeze
bringing along a cool sense of calm.
It’s up and down.
It’s stitched and unstitched.
It’s sure and then unsure.
It’s second guessing.
It's always wanting to be somewhere,
but not sure if you’re there yet.
Am I there yet?
Am I there yet?
Soon the asking gets old.
The mind
trained to question again and again
over and over
on repeat
until you realize:
happiness is black and white with gray around the edges.

I'm in this for the long haul.
